CityHub announces first German hotel with Hamburg conversion

LONDON – CityHub, the Netherlands-based hospitality brand known for its tech-enabled modular “Hub” rooms, has confirmed plans to open CityHub Hamburg, its first hotel in Germany and fifth European location. The development forms part of the company’s strategy to expand across major urban centres in Europe through adaptive reuse and conversion projects.

The new hotel will be created through the redevelopment of the existing Hotel Pacific building in Hamburg. In partnership with Kohler & von Bargen, a local real estate development firm and lead investor in the project, CityHub will double the current number of rooms from 52 to 110 by applying its space-efficient modular room concept.

Located between St. Pauli and Sternschanze, two of Hamburg’s most vibrant neighbourhoods, the property will offer compact private hub rooms alongside shared guest amenities, including premium shared bathrooms and a communal hangout space. The location also benefits from strong transport connectivity, just a few stops from Hamburg Central Station.

Remco Gerritsen, CEO of CityHub, commented: “Hamburg is one of Germany’s most dynamic and fastest-growing destinations, making it a natural fit for the next phase of our European expansion. Our ambition is to build a connected network of CityHub Hotels in key urban centres across Europe, providing modern travellers with a consistent, design-led experience that blends privacy, technology and affordability. Hamburg’s strong tourism growth, cultural vibrancy and progressive approach to urban development makes it an ideal location for our first German site.”

The project reflects CityHub’s broader strategy of repurposing existing property assets rather than requiring full demolition or new builds.

Remco Gerritsen explains:“For developers and investors, CityHub offers a compelling proposition. Our space-efficient Hub concept allows for a significantly higher room count within the same space, maximising potential revenue per square metre. Our prefab plug-and-play concept also allows us to redevelop dated hotels or buildings that are not usually considered fit for traditional hotel developments, into high-performing assets with lower capital expenditure and shorter development timelines.

This approach is not just financially efficient; it is environmentally responsible. By repurposing existing structures, we reduce the need for new construction, cut embodied carbon – and benefit from a lower carbon footprint per person, while helping cities evolve in a more circular and sustainable way. We are proud to partner with Kohler & von Bargen to bring this vision to life and showcase how a modern hospitality concept can unlock value while enriching the fabric of a vibrant Hamburg neighbourhood.”

Helmut Köhler at Köhler & von Bargen commented: “The Hotel Pacific building has long attracted interest due to its prime location in one of Hamburg’s most energetic and diverse districts. But we have taken a deliberate, long-term approach to its redevelopment. We wanted a project that would be durable, sustainable, and create lasting value, not just for investors, but for the local community and the city’s growing visitor base.

CityHub’s model really stood out for its innovation, its proven success in other European cities, and its ability to breathe new life into traditional hospitality assets. By reimagining the space rather than rebuilding it, this project will preserve the building’s structure while delivering a smart, contemporary and high-density accommodation offer that meets the needs of today’s travellers.”

Construction and redevelopment work on CityHub Hamburg is scheduled to begin in late 2025, with the hotel expected to open in 2027. The launch follows earlier CityHub sites in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Copenhagen and Reykjavik, with further European locations under consideration.
